Get a track
Sounds easy, right? Well, it is. Hopefully you're working with a track producer who doesn't only make hot beats, but is able to "track" them out for you. (Head over to the Hip-Hop/R&B FAQ if you don't know what this means.) This is when you write, arrange, and test your material on unsuspecting friends, colleagues, and small furry woodland creatures. (OK, so maybe not that last one.) Once you know it's bangin', then it's time to book.
Record
Alright, so you're in the booth, headphones on, levels set- what are you going to do? Will you start reading off a page like a hippie with a haiku on open mic night? Or will you drop your verse from the dome? (HINT: Memorization makes it better.) Seriously though, would you take your notebook on stage?
Mixing & Mastering
So you got your track laid down. Now it's time to make sure everything sits in it's place. Want that word echo'ed or that spot in the beat dropped out? Do it now or forever hold your peace. Just remember, this is not an engineer waving a magic wand and making it all better- this is you and your engineer, side by side, making sure that what you leave with represents you and your art.
